What did the Aztecs believe in?
There were many religious temples and other buildings dedicated to what the Aztecs believed in (like their Gods). They would place sacred temples on top of mountains since the mountains were closer to Heaven which is where their Gods were. Unlike the Christian views and other religions like that, the Aztecs had more than one God they believed in and different methods in showing the Gods they believed them and cherished them. Each different God had different personalities and powers.
One of the big methods that the Aztecs did was human sacrifice. The Aztecs would kill another person as they believed the victims blood fed the Gods. If the Gods weren’t fed blood, they would die. They also believed the Gods would get angry and that the world would end. They most likely thought the world would end by earthquakes as they were in the fifth sun era according to their calendar. Previous eras had been destroyed by jaguars, hurricanes, fiery ran and by a flood. Tonatiuh (one of their Gods) had his tongue sticking out in the centre of their calendar. This indicated that he wanted to be fed blood. A reason war was so important to the Aztecs was because they could capture victims and sacrifice their blood to the Gods.
They also hosted an important religious event every 52 years. They would let their fires go out and wait on rooftops to see the flame lit near Tenochtitlan. After, a courier would carry the flame from house to house to relight the flames.
